I believe that the government's choice to introduce an environmental tax is a smart move. 

As Claire mentioned, this policy will deter companies from harming the environment by imposing hefty fines, thereby encouraging them to adopt greener business practices. These practices may involve using renewable energy as well as energy-saving equipment, or even reducing waste through recycling. Ultimately, this policy can help businesses become more sustainable. BP (British Petroleum), one of the world's biggest oil and gas companies, is a prime example. After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, BP faced significant backlash because this is one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history. Since then, BP was subjected to massive government fines, spent billions of dollars on cleaning up the oil spill, funded efforts to restore the damaged ecosystems, and started a shift towards renewable energy. From this case, we can see that government penalties can encourage companies to improve their environmental practices and reduce further damage.
