I totally disagree that teachers in the past had a greater influence on young people for several reasons.
Firstly, one important factor relates to the academic aspect. By that I mean, nowadays most teachers need to undergo more systematic and rigorous training and have decent educational backgrounds to become who they are now. This means their teaching competence outcompetes that of teachers in the past. Such improved teaching ability would positively influence students, especially in terms of their academic performance.
In fact, when teachers are equipped with new teaching knowledge and the most state-of-the-art technological products, they can deliver their lessons in a much more vivid way. These engaging courses can greatly attract students' attention, promoting their absorption of knowledge, thus increasing learning efficiency. Consequently, students' learning progress can be reflected in a wide range of tests and assessments—one of the key indicators of school performance. This, in contrast, was not easily achievable when teachers in the past lacked access to technology and high-quality educational resources.
Some may argue that technological advances can diminish the influence of teachers because students can have other sources of information instead of relying on their teachers. There is a truth of element in this statement but it is equally true that teachers still serve other essential, irreplaceable functions. For instance, apart from technological literacy, teachers are also trained to be more aware of students' psychological health and become more emotionally responsive. By that I mean, when learning difficulties arise, teachers are always present at school, helping learners cope with obstacles and rise to different challenges.
In other words, teachers are just like a third parent, giving additional support (emotional and academic) to children, especially when parents are not there. Moreover, teachers' influence involves guiding children and helping them learn how to behave properly and respect their peers. Without teachers' help, children may fail to form good relationships with people from different backgrounds. Clearly, compared with the past, teachers are better role models who reinforce good behavior and important values. (336 words)
