Some people think visual images (like photograph or video) can tell information more accurately in a news story, while others think they are not reliable sources. Discuss both views and give your opinion. (2022/8/6)

Many people today turn to visual images such as photograph and video for news on the ground that they can provide more accurate information. It is perhaps right for them to do so, but they may also have failed to recognize the deceitfulness of visual images.
Obviously, photographs and videos enjoy some advantages over written words in communicating news. They present news in a vivid and direct way as if their audiences were looking at what is happening with their own eyes, making them feel that the news is real and accurate. The audiences of videos, for instance, can not only see what is going on there, but also such factual details as the facial expressions and gestures, and can distinguish the attitude of people through their voices. With all these information available, the audiences believe that they are in a good position to make their own judgments, in a way that is not possible when they are reading verbal form of news.
Yet what many people fail to understand is that visual news media can sometimes be misleading as well. It is important here that we remember any representation, be it verbal or visual, must necessarily be selective. Like other media, visual images are nothing else but given by the reporters behind. So what we see and hear in photographs and videos is what the reporters, who do the shooting and editing, want us to see and hear. In other words, the news reporters, if they wish, can provide us with inaccurate coverage of events by using visual images highly selective and involving highly personal perspectives.
My opinion, therefore, is that we should not be so naive as to be deceived by the “faithfulness” and “accuracy” of visual images. What really matters for faithful and accurate news stories is not the forms they are presented, but the willingness of the reporters to stay objective and unbiased.(316 words)
