It is often said that the more we use computers and mobile phones for communication, the worse our reading and writing skills will become. To my mind, however, what really matters to our reading and writing skills is how we use computers and mobile phones.

Admittedly, the excessive use of computers and mobile phones as communication tools may negatively influence our ability to read and write. The automatic spelling technologies installed in these tools, for instance, make it quite unnecessary for us to remember how words are correctly spelt. As a result, many of us simply forget the right spelling of words when they are writing without computers or mobile phones.

The worse thing is that, having been used to writing in the informal communication on computer and mobile phones, we often forget how to write in a formal style. In a recent case, a student was flunked by her professor because she used a lot of contractions and even emojis in her essay on literature.
